Established in 1986 under the World Bank assisted National Agricultural Extension Project (NAEP), CTI serves as the nodal point of KAU’s HRD activity and is mandated with training administration, documentation, negotiation, liaison, exploring scope for national and international training programmes. The training programmes undertaken by the institute are generally classified into:
Sponsored training - where the course fee is paid by the sponsoring agency
Vocational training - where the course fee is paid by the individual candidates
Stipendiary training - where a nominal stipend is paid to the trainees
HRD/MDP programmes for KAU and other organizational employees
In academic performance, the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has been adjudged the best in the nation for six consecutive years. KAU has the best qualified human resources with technical competency in over 200 subject matter areas. The Central Training Institute (CTI) functioning under the Directorate of Extension at Mannuthy facilitates the transfer of this immense knowledge and experience to various categories of stakeholders.
The Training Service Scheme (TSS), at the College of Agriculture, Vellayani serves as a sub-unit of CTI and is currently responsible for the Agri Clinics and Agribusiness scheme.

The trainer often has little say in deciding who will be deputed for training. Hence when trainees report for training the trainer no other option but to understand the personality of the Trainee and choose the appropriate stimulus to get the desired behaviour as outcome. It can be useful for the trainer to understand the broad categories under which trainees may be classified. The masculine pronoun has been used for convenience and there is no gender discrepancy in the categorization.
